Community
Building

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Community Building, communities:

  • Set expectations between Spark and the community

  • Develop a community mission and vision

  • Conduct resource analysis and mapping

  • Elect a leadership committee

PHASE TWO

Goal Setting

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Goal Setting, communities:

  1. ​Brainstorm and prioritize communal goals

  2. Develop objectives for reaching the top goal

  3. Research existing efforts to address each objective

  4. Identify a pathway to the objective

Malungi voted for their communal goal to be "income generation" and designed a motorcycle business to reach that goal. This social business employed several community members who drove  two motorcycles, which would generate daily income for the community. 


 
 
 

PHASE THREE

Proposal Development

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Proposal Development, communities:

  1. Develop metrics for project success

  2. Create an operational plan and budget

  3. Complete a risk assessment

  4. Draft bylaws and a sustainability plan

Malungi projected they would increase community income by $143 per month (which would be contributed to a shared bank account), allowing community members to provide a better education for their children. In order to sustain the project, Malungi launched their own savings and loan association.


 
 
 

PHASE FOUR

Technical Advisor Review

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Technical Advisor Review, communities:

  1. Receive training from a technical advisor, an outside specialist who is able to give expert judgment for the risk assessment and operational functionality of a specific project.

  2. Revise the proposal to create a strong, quality project plan

Malungi worked with Joseph Napoko from Post Bankto review their proposal and received training in financial management and record keeping. They also worked with the Bulambuli Boda Riders Associationto learn about safe driving practices.


 
 
 

PHASE Five

Implementation

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Implementation, communities:

  1. Receive the micro-grant from Spark 

  2. Enroll community members in our SMS program so they can be alerted in real time when grant disbursements are made via text message

  3. Launch their project

Malungi received a $2,250 microgrant in two installments and launched their motorcycle business. 

 
 

PHASE SIX

Future Envisioning

Malungi created the vision statement, "A community with sufficient income by 2020," and elected seven people to a leadership committee, four of whom are women.

During Future Envisioning, communities:

  1. Develop a post-Spark community plan and updated vision

  2. Build partnerships with local government, NGOs and businesses

  3. Independently manage their project

Malungi partnered with Post Bank to receive a $1,500 grant for their independent savings group and launched their own vegetable business.
